As Never Was

As my faithful readers will no doubt recall, I have a fascination with the Vegas casinos that have come and gone, often leaving an empty shell or other remnants of their passing behind. What could possibly be any more intriguing? How about Vegas landmarks that never existed in the first place?

Once Again, An Off-Strip Hotel Closes Its Doors

Sad news for my longtime readers, I'm sure: The Clarion on Convention Center Drive reportedly was closing over the Labor Day weekend. Over the years it had done business as the Royal, Royal Americana, Paddlewheel, Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Hotel and Greek Isles; as I reported on my last visit, vestiges of some of those last two incarnations could still be spotted on-site. Located not-quite-on-the-Strip, it had evidently struggled to establish a niche for itself under its many guises, and came within a hair's breadth of becoming a WWF or Hustler-branded casino at various times. This time, the old Royal may have used up the last of its lives.

Vegas Days Gone By: Der blaue Engel

If you're sightseeing along the more rundown stretch of East Fremont's old motel sector, you want to check out what remains of the Blue Angel Motel at 2110 East Fremont. The sign was designed by none other than Betty Willis, who was also responsible for the look of the iconic "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign at the south end of the Strip, as well as the short-lived Moulin Rouge (the first integrated club in Vegas). At one point there was talk of demolishing this locally-revered landmark to make room for new development, back before the recession took hold, so as always with Vegas you want to grab a look while you still can.

Plaza Basks In The Limelight

Downtown revelers have a new show to catch: "Limelight" opens at the Plaza on September 12. Creators Danny Brown and Jody MacDonald describe it as a mixture of vaudeville and burlesque, in tune with the latest Vegas craze for all things Prohibition-era. Get a taste here and check here for more details, including ticket information. Looks  positively Chaplinesque.

In Other News: I didn't even know MGM owned the Railroad Pass.

We'll Always Have Paris

Has it really been fifteen years? Paris Las Vegas is celebrating its anniversary on the Strip with an array of birthday specials, and they've really gone Number 15 crazy: Casino bars are offering special anniversary cocktails, the Eiffel Tower Restaurant's signature drink "Eiffel Affair" is $15, St. Louis Cafe has a $15 three-course lunch, Cafe Belle Madeleine has a special anniversary pastry, Le Village Buffet offers weekday lunches for $19.99, and, finally, the Wedding Chapel has a special wedding package for $1500. Enjoy these specials while you can; September only lasts 30 days, after all.

MGM Says Enough Is Enough: As you may have read here recently, the MGM Grand's Lion's Share slot finally paid out its jackpot after a two-decade wait. Now that it's finally disgorged its jackpot, the MGM is retiring the machine; the Review-Journal has the story, including more details of its fabled past and its possible future home.
